Flat River Farms Medicinal Gardens

Flower Gardens                   Veggie Gardens
Herb Gardens                                        Medicinal Garden

We grow a variety of herbals for our own usage including red velvet and terra cotta yarrow, garlic, rosemary, basil, thyme, oregano, and gold leaf bee balm. Our biggest investment this year will be in chicory which we anticipate using as feed plots for the foraging deer and for coffee. We use only heirloom seeds and we seed save from year to year and plant as many perennials as we can.

Amending the soil here is a constant battle, so composting is a necessity more than a luxury. There was literally no topsoil when we moved here. The land was in it's previous life time a beef farm and as a result of old world management and the lack of environmental knowledge been pushed off so many times through out the years that all we were left with was a pasture of fescue and that wonderful yellow grey clay that lies underneath that wonderfully rich tobacco growing red clay.

Occasionally we have extra's in batches of things we make for ourselves. We do not mass market anything we make, but do occasionally have extras or more than we need that we trade or barter with or put for sale on our website.

How important are our gardens? They are the backbone of our diet and medicine chest and the excess is fed to the animals that feed us throughout the year.

Our practice of shunning store bought goods comes from a variety of research done on what goes into the foods we eat, the medicines we take and from years of eating from grandma's garden.

Knowing the difference in the quality and taste of all natural foods as compared to those cultivated in mass production. You haven't had a tomato till you've had one that ripened naturally on the vine and was allowed to develop on it's own accord pulling all it's goodness from the soil.
