Flat River Farms Chickens

We raise a variety of chickens at Flat River Farms. This year has been a year of extremes as far as weather goes and we've had really rotten luck with our chickens.

This year we've added a Brown Leghorns and are focusing on those and the Rhode Island Reds, good dual purpose birds with a beautiful skin quality perfect for frying or roasting.

Normally we raise Rhode Island Reds, Dominickers, Barred Rocks, White Leghorns and Buff Orphingtons.  We occasionally have mixed breeds and other varieties available such as New Hampshire Reds, and California Whites.

Most off our poultry are selected by breed and we look for birds that are tolerant of the extreme temperature and weather that we experience here, that lay well most of the year without the assistance of extra light and encouragement. Dual purpose birds that dress out well with a plump breast and large size eggs.

We feed a diet of cracked corn, grass, weeds and wheat straw as well as garden pickings, kitchen scraps and fresh veggies in season. Like everything else on the Farm, our poultry is free range and raised without the benefit of hormones, chemicals or medications.

In the years past we have kept a variety of ducks, guineas. quail and turkeys.

You can see photos from our poultry in our photo album.

If you're interested in poultry products from the farm, drop us a line or join our mailing list. We'll let you know what is available as we have it. We do try to offer our extra eggs and chicks to our friends at a reasonable cost and always open to a trade or barter for other items we can not produce ourselves.
