Flat River Farms Blog
At last post, we were on the edge of giving up the farm idea and just letting go and looking for a way out. Financially the farm has never been profitable. So money was never an issue.
It did however feed us, and keep us happy :) and God knows those are the important things in life.
In the last couple of months I've had to do a lot of soul searching and refocusing of my time and attention towards rebuilding what was our way of life.
It feels funny not to have to worry about animals escaping or big feed runs anymore and I still find myself a little lost. I miss the critters. Miss the noise, miss the responsibilty and the love. This was truly a labor of love.
On the horizon... Revamping what we do to fit what is commonly acceptable in polite society. I ain't no Paula Dean or Martha Stewart and this ain't no fairy tale...
That leaves me a lot of room to breathe! LOL
And a lot of room for improvement!!
Basically, we are going to have to rethink this whole thing, our diet, figure out how to hide the animals we keep from public view, and minimize the livestock so that they can remain incognito.
So... I guess this means no pigs.... no cows... they're a little hard to hide. What it DOES mean is that we must focus on what we CAN have, like the chickens, the rabbits and the guiena pigs, pigeons, and anything that can live without free ranging. A goat or two can be tethered... and that will supply milk for cooking etc... and they do like the woods. (They'll even prune the trees)
As for income from the farm. The focus there isn't on selling animal products anymore but continuing the development of the books, booklets, and phamplets we sell. The articles that we author and the publication of several books that will be in print in what we hope is in the spring. You will be able to find those on Amazon.com - Join the mailing list and I'll notify you when they are released.
There are also the handcrafted items that we will be able to work on, furniture, gift items, christmas ornaments, the soaps, tinctures, salves and ointments. Those will gain new importance. While they are normally something done only for ourselves, we're going to focus on making them available as we have them at affordable prices.
The prices people charge for things anymore has gotten way out of hand. Greed. Just plain greed. Kills my soul. We all need money to live, but everyone wants more than they need? I don't understand that. I alway believed if you had more than you needed you had enough to give to those who weren't so fortunate.
This new world order has me totally confused and very out of place. This is really no longer my world.
Which too has a heavy weight on my shoulders. So, I'll build my own world and dare anyone to burst my bubble.
Now that I think I'm over the shock of 'changes' I'm mad as hell and determined to have things 'back to rights'. Time to put my world back in order.
Don't touch that dial! Stay tuned for the next exciting episode!
I've got to get me one of those voice recogniton software deals... you know of one that understands 'redneck'? ROFLMAO!
Ya'll take care.
